Gentle Osteopathy for Pregnancy and Babies in Andover

Pregnancy, birth and early motherhood place enormous physical demands on the body, for both mum and baby.

Gentle cranial osteopathy can help support you through this important time, easing discomfort during pregnancy, helping recovery after birth, and supporting your baby’s comfort and development.

During birth, various stresses and strains can affect a baby’s body, potentially leading to discomfort, feeding difficulties, or unsettled behavior. Cranial osteopathy uses delicate, hands-on techniques to release these tensions, promoting natural balance and wellbeing.

Treatment focuses on the entire body, including the skull, spine, abdomen, and limbs, helping to ease any residual strain from birth. Special attention may also be given to the jaw, throat, and soft palate, which can support more comfortable breastfeeding or bottle feeding if difficulties arise.

This safe and soothing approach encourages relaxation and supports the body’s innate ability to heal, making it a popular choice for early infant wellbeing.

Support after Birth

The post-natal period is a time of recovery and adjustment.

Osteopathy can help with:

  • Postural strain from feeding and carrying your baby

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Lower back or pelvic discomfort

  • Recovery after caesarean birth

  • Returning to comfortable movement

Many mothers find that treatment in the weeks after birth helps them recover more comfortably while caring for their newborn.

How Can Cranial Osteopathy Help Your Baby?

Some babies seem uncomfortable, unsettled or difficult to soothe.
This can sometimes relate to tension in the neck, spine or digestive system. Gentle osteopathic treatment may help improve comfort and relaxation.

Cranial osteopathy can help ease the physical stresses from pregnancy and birth, supporting your baby’s comfort and wellbeing. It may be beneficial for:

  • Birth-Related Trauma - Difficult or prolonged labour, rapid delivery, or interventions such as ventouse or forceps.

  • Feeding Challenges - Tongue-tie, Difficulty latching, discomfort while feeding, or a preference for one side.

  • Crying & Sleep Disturbances - Excessive fussiness, colic, unsettled behavior, or trouble sleeping.

  • Digestive Issues - Reflux, trapped wind, or constipation.

  • Head Shape & Neck Tension – Positional head asymmetry or congenital torticollis.

Even if no symptoms are present, a postnatal osteopathic assessment can help identify and address any underlying tensions, promoting healthy development and preventing future issues.

What Happens During a Baby Appointment?

Ashling Casey-Moore providing gentle osteopathic care for mothers and babies

Prior to the appointment you will be sent an in-depth questionnaire about the pregnancy, birth, peri-natal period and what you are hoping to achieve through attending the clinic.

During the first appointment the baby will need to be undressed to their nappy long enough for them to be thoroughly examined top to toe.

Appointments are calm, gentle and unhurried. If it suits you can come early or stay on after your baby’s appointment at the clinic to feed/change them.

During most of the appointment your baby can remain:

  • in your arms

  • feeding

  • resting comfortably

  • asleep

Treatment uses very light touch techniques to assess and release areas of tension.

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and are fully involved throughout.
